Q: One visitor asked, "We are having floors put down in Dallas Texas - wood floors - stained and then coats of poly urethane were place the floor. They were left unstained for three weeks - then stained - left only a day or two and then poly on top. How long should the poly dry and how long is BEST for each process? We are in NO hurry, but have been told the stain and poly should be left for a week to dry. We want them PERRRRR-fect."

A: Each product has it's own specifications for drying. Such are only a guide. Drying is affected by temperature, humidity, ventilation or lack of, and how heavy the finish was applied. Generally, stains require over night drying. A fair test to see if it is ready for coating is to wipe the floor with a clean white cloth the next day. If it is thoroughly dry, there will be no stain transfer to the cloth.

Likewise with oil based polyurethanes. Drying is usually overnight for buff and re coat. Normal but careful traffic after 24 hours. Heavy traffic after several days. No area rugs for 1-2 weeks.

I have seen a lot of very good flooring jobs. I doubt I have ever seen one that is absolutely perfect. Good luck on that one.:) You will be walking on this masterpiece.
