Q: One visitor asked, "I have recently had a portion of my Hickory hardwood floor replaced. The install was great and they match of the hickory looks great as well. My question is that when the put the final coat of poly over the enitre floor as well as the repaired section the buffer seems to have left swirl marks all over the floor. I brought the marks to their attention immediately and they told me the swirl marks will go away after the poly has time to harden and age. The poly they used was oil based and no stain was applied to the floor. Is what they are telling me true or are they trying to get paid for the job even though it was done poorly?"

A: Swirl marks like this have a number of causes. It is the curse of us floor guys. Fortunately, I don't have it happen very often. If you use a gloss finish, it will highlight such marks for sure. Satin or semi will hide them. No, they won't disappear on their own. The floor will need to be buffed again with a very fine screen. they may consider using a maroon pad with fine abrasive strips as these were designed to help eliminate this problem.
